Bridging the Columbia
The Columbia and Red Mountain Railroad Bridge
one of the first bridges across the Columbia River in the United States
First passenger train to cross the newly completed Red Mountain Railroad bridge at Northport Oct. 12, 1897 [1]
In 1922, the railroad bridge was converted into a wagon and automobile roadway.
In 1946, the deteriorating wooden bridge was condemned and a ferry began operating in 1947
The old bridge was then dismantled
After the old bridge was condemned, construction began on a new bridge
The middle pier was undermined in the high water of 1948 and had to be dynamited
