Ben Hofer was associated with the Kendrick store from 1916 until his death in 1970.  He began in the warehouse, later bought into the business and was the manager in its later years.
In the center of the store was a cage where the smelter employees received their pay. It was good business for the store with 500 to 600 men working at the smelter.
Ben married Viola Vail in 1922 and they lived in the apartment above the store for the next 48 years.
