The Smelter Monument

In 2004, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cleaned up the remains of the Northport smelter. 
In order to preserve the memory of the time when Northport thrived and industry reigned, the EPA was approached for a donation for a monument. Two thousand dollars was given for a bronze plaque. Thus the Monument project was born.

Money was raised and local volunteers donated their labor to bring the project to fruition.

The bronze plaque was mounted on a replica of the last smelter chimney.

On September 7, 2009, the completed monument was dedicated as part of Northport's Labor Day celebration.
State senator Bob Morton was the guest speaker.
